The Girls

When I was in 4-H my parents and I decided we’d get some chickens. This was right around Y2K so we figured it’d be a good addition to the homestead and if the world as we knew it came to a stand still at least we could have an omelet and angel food cake. I remember drooling over all the chicken pictures in the Murray McMurray catalogs… not because of the chicken legs but because of all the sweet little pets I wanted!Little did I know how much I’d fall in love with my “girls.” I decided then and there I didn’t want to live without chickens.

When I met Jere I was happy to find out that he loved poultry too and had a nice little flock of Sultans. Our flock has grown over the last few years to include 25+ rare breed chickens, geese and ducks. I’m glad we’re able to pass our love of the girls onto Sasha as well as other kids who visit our farm. They are the highlight of school groups who tour the homestead.

In Missouri we often hatch chicks in the spring and have them for sale in the store and during festivals. So, if you want to start your own little flock, swing by our Missouri store in May or check out a reliable hatchery such as Murray McMurray.
